The EU, ECB and IMF have requested that the Greek statistics authority ELSTAT gain greater autonomy, in order to ensure the reliability of its statistics and to adhere to international standards.

As such, the Greek government is preparing a bill which will include the necessary provisions that will safeguard ELSTAT’s independence and safeguard the statistics authority against any attempts to undermine its credibility. The new bill will seek to streamline ELSTAT with new European directives on the European Statistics System.

The outstanding fifth review of the Greek bailout program included an agreement for the Greek government to take the necessary measures towards this goal, by granting ELSTAT access to the necessary tax data.
