The Ministry of Productive Reconstruction, Environment and Energy has decided to repeal the licenses of Hellas Gold, the firm operating a controversial mining operation in Skouries, in northern Greece.
According to Alternate Minister of Environment and Energy Yannis Tsironis, the goal is to determine whether the firm’s activities comply with the licenses that have already been issued. It appears that the firm’s enrichment plan has been constructed without any building terms.
Mr. Tsironis underlined that the Ministry has so far only examined urban planning matters and not the mining operations itself. He added that the Ministry has not yet reached a conclusion of whether to suspend any operations.
Previously the Minister of Productive Reconstruction, Environment and Energy Panagiotis Lafazanis declared that the government is against the mining operation and would seek out legal means to address the matter. He also noted that he would support the mine employees and their prospects.
