The Alternate Minister of Migration Tasia Christodoulopoulou announced that immigration legislation from 2011 will be used in order to address the major problems experienced at the controversial migrant detention centers in Greece.

Mrs. Christodoulopoulou told Mega Channel that the detention centers are expensive and inefficient, stressing that that “you cannot keep people there forever and at some point they will leave”. Instead, migrant needs will be addressed by reception and accommodation centers.

The provisions of the 2011 legislation cited by the Alternate Minister of Migration includes the obligation of reporting to police station near residence, documenting migrant residence, paying a guarantee and the withholding of travel documents.

Furthermore, Mrs. Christodoulopoulou stressed that immigration not merely a Greek problem, but rather a world-wide and European matter. The Alternate Minister further noted that Athens will demand the proportional distribution of refugees and migrants, as provided by European acts on immigration.
