The internationally renowned oncologist Dr. Thanos Dimipoulos has been elected as the new Rector at the University of Athens and is expected to assume his post by the end of the week.

Dr. Dimopoulos, who received a record 57% of the vote in the first round of elections, will succeed Mr. Fortsakis, who resigned from the post in order to participate in the January snap elections with New Democracy.

Amongst Dr. Dimopoulos’ first priorities is to see the return of the administrative employees which the previous government had decided to dismiss, as well as finding solutions to the sanitation and heating problems. Regarding the heating issue, he plans on switching to natural gas, which is expected to reduce costs significantly.

The newly-elected Rector is listed in the 1% of scientists with international influence, according to a recent listing by Thomson Reuters and has tens of thousands (23,688) of journal citations and about 700 journal publications.
