The French Minister of Finances Michel Sapin commented that Germany firm stance regarding Greece’s debt matters is correct, however the Eurozone must also respect the change of government in Greece, in an interview on the France 2 television network.

Mr. Sapin argued that “Greece, not the government of today, the country, signed a number of agreements. They must respect those agreements independently of the change of government. But the Greeks say, and they are right, I support them, ‘we have just changed government, so we are not going to do everything as before’.”.

He then added that “we have to do is to find a way of functioning together” and expressed his hope of Greece and its creditors coming to an agreement on Monday’s Eurogroup session in Brussels. When asked to quantify such a chance though, Mr. Sapin declined.

A Reuters report further reveals taht the German Minister of Finances Wolfgang Schäuble did not share his French counterpart’s optimism of a deal and noted that he was “very skeptical”, based on the technical discussions that took place over the weekend.
