The SYRIZA / Independent Greeks coalition government received a vote of confidence in Parliament, after a long session that began on Tuesday morning and ended in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The government received 162 votes; 149 from SYRIZA and 13 from the Independent Greeks. The opposition parties – New Democracy, Golden Dawn, The River, KKE and PASOK – voted against the government

Prior to the vote Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras delivered, where he recapped his administration’s policy statement and argued that stressed that the recent elections were not a change of parties in power, but rather the end of the political regime that rule the country for 40 years and is responsible for the catastrophic past five years.

New Democracy president and main opposition leader Antonis Samaras took the stand and stressed that he would not allow the country “to hit the rocks”, while promising to offer “more support than you can imagine” if the government acts “responsibly”.
