The leader of the main opposition Alexis Tsipras appeared at his party’s youth festival over the weekend, where he responded to the criticism from Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and government Vice President Evangelos Venizelos.

Mr. Tsipras stated that “Europe needs a Left with stable principles and values, but which will not entrench itself” and added that “it needs a left that will welcome and interact with social movements and popular outbursts”. The SYRIZA leader explained that his party has had a stabilizing effect, in reference to the outbursts of indignation and the “revolting ideas of fascism”.

The SYRIZA leader demonstrated his willingness to pursue a European direction, by stressing the need for a Left that will pursue greater alliances and cooperation in order to find the best possible solution for the problems the country faces. Mr. Tsipras added that “we must unite our forces and propose solutions for our common home”.

The opposition leader finally argued that politics and social needs must take precedence over the markets, that the “people must come before profits” and expressed his intention “to hold the rating agencies accountable”.
