The director of Alexis Tsipras political office, Nikos Pappas appeared on SKAI’s news show, where he discussed the possibility of a referendum regarding the troika deal and the euro.

Mr. Pappas stressed that “we must disassociate the euro from the referendum” and further elaborated that “we are not say that we must have a referendum to approve the deal, but if the negotiations appear to be taking long, then the people will have the first word”.

The office director added that a SYRIZA government would pursue a new deal with the troika, since “the people’s vote will cancel the current deal”. When the interviewing journalist opined that a possible referendum is a disclaimer of responsibility, Mr. Pappas replied that “we are no Pontius Pilates”.

When asked how SYRIZA would react to Greece’s partners associating a possible referendum with the euro, Mr. Pappas remarked that he was “positive” that Germany “would not risk the euro mega-project, because Greece was trying to protect wages”.

Mr. Pappas also attributed the democratic operation of SYRIZA to the different opinions harbored by party members regarding the euro.
