Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the LSE Nikos Mouzelis has issued a public statement to his former comrades in the “Initiative of 58” regarding his role in the dialogue committee for constitutional reform.

In his statement Professor Mouzelis clarifies that he has not joined SYRIZA and argues that despite of its mistakes, it is the only political force at present that is capable of carrying out the difficult task of remaining on a European course.

Later on, Prof. Mouzelis explains that the current government is being demonized due to the false idea that SYRIZA intends to overthrow democracy and wants to establish a regime a la Putin or Erdogan. This, he stressed, is an extreme fantasy and stated that Tsipras does not desire so, nor can he remain in the Eurozone if he attempts something as such.

In relation to the dialogue committee, the professor commented that it is an effort in democratizing the political system and condemned the understanding that only MPs have the right to handle the constitutional review, in a country where party politics proliferate.

In concluding his statement, Prof. Mouzelis warned that demonizing SYRIZA will create a dangerous division that could undermine the country’s democracy that came from sacrifices.
