It would be best for New Democracy if I am elected in the first round” argued the candidate for the party leadership Apostolos Tzitzikostas in a Monday morning interview on SKAI.

Mr. Tzitzikostas, who according to a survey is in the lead in the election race, argued that party supporters will vote in order to help the party develop and rejected the possibility of a split, should he be elected.

Regarding the problem that has emerged over the prospect of the main opposition party leader not being an MP, Mr. Tzitzikostas pointed to the party’s regulations, which provide that the leader can appoint two vice presidents, one of whom will be in charge of the party’s presence in parliament.

Finally, Mr. Tzitzikostas accused the coalition government of implementing an ‘open door’ policy in relation to the refugee crisis and stated that international organizations, NGOs and the EU should have been involved much earlier.
