The leadership of SYRIZA has decided to adopt of doctrine of with regards to the possibility of post-election alliances, in an effort to galvanize voter support. At the same time though, the party is still coping with recent departures and the upheaval caused.

On Sunday’s nationwide party conference, SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras emphasized that there was no chance of an alliance with New Democracy or PASOK. On Monday though, Nikos Voutsis rule out new elections being called and commented that alliances with democratic parties “aside from New Democracy” will be considered.

Mr. Voutsis told Vima 99.5 FM that the main parameter will be how the people vote, while stressing that it would be preferable for a party to establish an independent government. He categorically ruled out any alliances with the old political system – particularly New Democracy – and stressed that there was no possibility for a greater alliance in Greece.

When asked about the River or PASOK though Mr. Voutsis responded that while there was no such chance based on current circumstances, he added that the party would reconsider its options after the elections. Mr. Voutsis hinted that there was a possibility of an alliance, while ruling out new elections being called.

SYRIZA spokesperson Olga Gerovasili similarly told Vima 99.5 FM that alliances with other parties have not been ruled out, but clarified that a coalition with political forces that observe an extreme neoliberal policy and are in total agreement with the creditors who blackmailed the country is not possible.
