At least 419 people died and hundreds more were injured or missing as tsunami tidal waves unleashed by a massive earthquake off Indonesia hit the region. Σεισμική δόνηση 4,4 βαθμών σημειώθηκε στις 09:07 το πρωί σε απόσταση 250 χιλιομέτρων νοτιοδυτικά της Αθήνας.
Σύμφωνα με το Γεωδυναμικό Ινστιτούτο του Εθνικού Αστεροσκοπείου Αθηνών το επίκεντρο της δόνησης εντοπίζεται στον θαλάσσιο χώρο 37 χιλιόμετρα νοτιοδυτικά της Πύλου.
