A 47-year-old police sergeant who was stationed in Thessaloniki has been arrested for the murder of his 7-year-old daughter. The 47-year-old officer will face the public prosecutor of Thessaloniki on Wednesday and face charges.

Preliminary reports suggest that the 47-year-old man strangled his own daughter in the apartment he shared with his wife and two children, before calling the police. Paramedics were rushed to the apartment, but it was too late. At the time of the crime his wife was outside with her younger daughter.

So far there are no indications as to what caused the 47-year-old father to carry out the heinous act. He had recently returned from parental leave, after the birth of his second child. Some reports suggest that the 7-year-old victim was noisy.

Unconfirmed sources indicate that the officer had been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder in 2003-04, however a medical committee later found that he was fit for duty.
