A total of 21 suspects have been referred to the Felony Appeal Court of Thessaloniki, where they will stand trial for the assault against the controversial mining facilities owned by Hellenic Gold in Skouries of Halkidiki, in February 2013.

The main charge against all 21 of the defendants is the formation of a criminal organization. On an individual basis, the 21 also face other felony charges, such as attempted manslaughter, possession of explosives, arson etc.

All 21 of the defendants are residents in the north east of Halkidiki and are members of the movement opposing the mining investment. They have all rejected the charges. Local residents have vehemently opposed the mining operation as it will have a severe impact on the environment and their livelihood.

The courts are to decide at a later point on referring a further 29 people for their participation in the violent demonstrations that followed soon after.
