The District of Attica is currently examining two tenders prepared by the General Secretary of Sport for the maintenance of the Santiago Calatrava-designed roof of the Olympic Stadium of Athens.
The emblematic roof, which was constructed part of the 130-million-euro redesign for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, has never been maintained since construction and is in a critical state.
The problem appears to be that the Ministry of Culture never secured the funds for the complicated and costly maintenance, but a few months ago it approved a proposal of former Attica District Governor Yannis Sgouros to fund two tenders with an 8-million-euro budget.
The new District Governor Rena Dourou is currently reviewing her predecessor’s plans and should they be approved, then the General Secretary of Sport will declare the tenders. The funds will be drawn from the District’s Public Investment Program, with the approval of the Ministry of Growth.
The first tender is for the observation and documentation of the structural engineering behavior of the Olympic Stadium’s steel constructions, which includes the aforementioned roof. The second tender is for the maintenance of the metallic structures, based on the findings of the first one.
