The fires onboard the Norman Atlantic have finally been extinguished, allowing teams of specialists to enter the cargo and vehicle deck of the ferry to begin their investigation.
Fire fighters will attempt to enter the lower decks of the ferry boat and use thermal cameras to locate any people who may have tragically perished in the fire. At present there are passengers who are still unaccounted for.
Various media reports have suggested that aside from truck drivers who were sleeping in their vehicles overnight during the ferry’s fateful journey, there were also an unspecified number of immigrants hiding on board.
The Norman Atlantic is currently moored at Brindisi, however should the Italian prosecutor order the clearing of the ship’s vehicle deck for the investigation, then it will have to be transporter elsewhere, possibly Bari, where the necessary infrastructures and means are available.
