The five-year crisis has not only turned over habits and cozy arrangements that have been in place for years; it did not just reveal the ills of the political system; it also unveiled society’s true colors: the ethics and values if the simple people, as well as the ruling classes. Because beyond the tragic mistakes and omissions in policy which we all recognize and accept, responsibility lies with the forces that not only tolerated this situation, but profited from and it managed to dominate in the financial and social life.
It is commonly held that if we managed to survive today it is down to the heavy price that was paid and is continued to be paid by broad social forces. Not all of them though… Because there were many who either suffered a little or managed to come out of the crisis unscathed. They are the one who rushed to export their money as soon as they realized that the crisis was no fleeting matter.
There are major businessmen who rushed to transfer their business headquarters to other countries or form funds in order to secure greater tax cuts. There are others who are concerned about growth, but refuse to invest or even save their companies, preferring instead the security provided by the money they have set aside.
Some will not even hesitate to act like critics and moralists, denouncing the political system that benefited them so much in the past. They will lash out against tax evasion, but at the same time they will look out for tax loopholes in other countries in order to pay fewer taxes.
The country needs a truly responsible, determined and reliable political system in order to finally leave the crisis behind. It also requires that the leading financial and social classes demonstrate that they are not mere interested in their financial interests, that they truly believe in national recovery, that they are investing in our collective self-confidence, that they can rise above their selfish interests; that they are not fighting to protest vehemently in a deeply hut country, but that they a vision and goals that serve the greater social and financial interest.
So basically a little more patriotism in action instead of grandiose promises that result in nothing…
