The former mayor of Thessaloniki Vasilis Papageorgopoulos, who is held at the prison in Diavata, has published a new open letter where he claims to be innocent.

Mr. Papageorgopoulos claims in his letter that the results of an investigation into his personal and political bank accounts prove his innocence and argues that he is “the first – and probably last – leader of a political organization that is put to trial for money legitimately collected via coupons”.

The imprisoned former mayor is scheduled to appear in the Felony Appeal Court in Thessaloniki on Tuesday, where he will address charges regarding a sum of about 260,000 euros that was circulated from joint account he held with former municipal general secretary Michalis Lemousias.
