Western Africa is threatened by the Ebola virus and the anti-West Boko Haram; Libya is in the midst of a multi-faceted civil conflict where extremist Muslims also want to enforce sharia law.

Neighboring Tunisia is trying to deal with the endless waves of Libyan refugees near its borders, while Egypt’s General Sisi is worried that a potential religious resurgence may disrupt the current, relative stability.

On the other side, religious fanaticism is guiding the conflict of Israelis and Palestinians, determines the conflict in Syria and – lately – guided the blood-thirsty jihadists of the newly-formed caliphate of Iraq and the Levant who are pressuring Baghdad, the Iraqi Kurds and lately Lebanon and Jordan.

Meanwhile, the conflict of Russia with the West, as a result of the Ukrainian crisis, intensifies the climate of instability by disseminating waves of insecurity throughout the world.

In the midst of this global upheaval Greece is a turning point, where it is trying to collect the pieces from the great financial crisis and stand back on its feet.

Obviously the dangers for our country multiply and avoiding them requires skillful handling and a united – to be greatest possible degree – domestic front.

The government and opposition ought to set aside their differences and find common ground in order to deal with the potential threats and dangers from abroad.

The domestic rivalry can wait…
