Residents and municipal authorities of Langadas have blocked access to the landfill site of Mavrorahi, in the early hours of Monday. Access is only permitted to garbage collection trucks from hospitals, public markets and schools. As a result, neighborhoods are littered with uncollected garbage.
A unanimous council meeting resulted in the decision to close the landfill site. According to Langadas Mayor Ioannis Anastasiadis, their “siege” is symbolic and will only last a day. Mr. Ioannidis stressed that “we do not want to cause trouble with the garbage, but we are forced into this procedure”. The Mayor explained that “we wait for those in charge to commit to the proper operation of the landfill site and to proceed with the peripheral design”.
The Mayor warned that should their demands not be examined, the municipal council will vote on permanently blocking the Mavrorahi landfill site, which in turn will most likely cause serious problems in the entire city of Thessaloniki.
