The Greek statistics authority ELSTAT has published its latest survey on the labor force, which shows that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May 2016 amounted to 23.5%, compared to 25.0% in May 2015 and the upward revised 23.5% in April 2016.

Overall the number of employed amounted to 3,653,788 persons, the unemployed amounted to 1,123,496 while the inactive to 3,274,393.

The employed increased by 59,723 persons compared to May 2015 (+1.7%) and decreased by 15,885 compared to April 2016 (-0.4%). The unemployed decreased by 73,843 (-6.2%) compared to May 2015 and by 2,555 compared to April 2016 (-0.2%).

Finally, the number of inactive persons –namely those who have neither worked nor looked for a job – decreased by 26,524 (-0.8%) compared to May 2015, and increased by 15,301 compared to April 2016 (+0.5%).
