Only nine days are left until New Democracy’s elections for a new leaded and the four candidates – Evangelos Meimarakis, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Adonis Georgiadis – are escalating their campaign efforts.

Aside from dispelled rumors of the various candidates withdrawing from the election race, the four candidates are concerned over the ‘intervention’ of former party leader and PM Antonis Samaras, who argued that the liberal reforms he introduced were only ‘temporarily’ suspended. The former party leader was also highly critical of the SYRIZA-led government in his article.

This statement has been interpreted as an attempt to possibly get involved again in the main political scene and initiated a major debate among party members over the future plans of Mr. Samaras, who has so far denied rumors of establishing a new party.
