About 2,500 migrants are scheduled to arrive at the port of Piraeus on Monday morning, on board the Eleftherios Venizelos ferry boat – in total 988 were picked up on Samos and a1,512 from Mytilene.
On Sunday evening the Cypriot-flagged Tera Jet catamaran arrived in Piraeus carrying 1,745 migrants from Mytilene.
The Coast Guard and port authorities have taken the necessary measures to ensure the safe disembarkation of the migrants.
Coast Guard pursues human traffickers off thecoast of Symi
At midday on Saturday a 25-meter ship carrying about 90 migrants was located off the coast of Symi. A Coast Guard vessel was promptly dispatched and began to pursue the traffickers. Eventually the Coast Guard vessel caught up and immobilized the traffickers.
Upon investigation the Coast Guard recovered the body of a child that may have died due to asphyxiation. During the chase three people were injured; one Coast Guard officer, one migrant and one of the alleged human traffickers.
Rescue operation near the port of Chios
The Coast Guard rescued 13 migrants in the maritime area near the port of Chios. The migrants were located by the crew on the Pelagitis ship, who informed the authorities. Aside from the 13 migrants who were rescued, one passenger recovered was unconscious, possibly dead.
