After delays, pointless conflicts and the dramatic consequences that followed the referendum, the new bailout is finally here. It includes a series of unbearable burdens for many categories of people, despite the government efforts to soften the blow, as well as many incomprehensible objections by the German side and their allies.

The left-wing government was forced to adapt to the harsh reality after a conflicted and hopeless negotiation. This had a heavy cost on the economy and society, as well as SYRIZA itself, which was equivalent to the price paid by the other parties that managed the consequences of the crisis.

The internal rift is a given, as a significant part of the party’s parliamentary group denounces the agreement and refuses to vote for it, while the President of Parliament continues to undermine the process. Despite these reactions though, the new bailout will be approved in Parliament, as the opposition’s support regarding the country’s European orientation is also a given.

The government may be faced with a difficult battles in Parliament and the Eurogroup, where the agreement will finally be ratified, but there are even more difficulties to come. The autumn is going to particularly busy, as the impact of the measures will start to become apparent, along with the consequences of the economic crash from the capital controls and the paralysis of the banking system.

The temptation of elections that at least part of the government is considering may restore balance within SYRIZA, but it will cause further harm to the economy and will not solve the political problem that plagues the country.

The painful lesson of the past months cannot be repeated. With the economy and society on the brink, with a difficult series of measures to come, there is no more room for experiments and other political delays. While there is still time they must assume their responsibilities and manage the major problems ahead of us and finally set aside the experiments on the backs of the people and the economy.
