The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker argued that the agreement reached with Greek authorities in Brussels was out of fear, in an interview for Belgian newspaper Le Soir.

Mr. Juncker commented that “we have avoided the worse, not because it was exceedingly wise, but because we were afraid; it is fear which enabled the agreement”. Furthermore he claimed that “Greece is wrong to feel humiliated” since the European Commission did everything possible in order to normalize the situation.

The European Commission chief also expressed his concern over the future of Europe, as major controversial issues – such as migration – have highlighted how difficult maintaining solidarity can be. Mr. Juncker went on to state that “Europeans do not like Europe” and estimated that the European integration has become an “elite project”, which in turn explains the gap between public opinion and European action.
