The Prime
Minister’s public denunciation of the opinions expressed by Lafazanis,
Varoufakis and the ministers who follow them is a first positive step towards
clearing out the situation in the government camp. Mr. Tsipras is not simply
distancing himself from the plans of a departure from the euro, IOUs and
invading the Bank of Greece; he is clearly expressing the need to sign an
agreement with our European partners.
Setting
aside the quibbles of the past few weeks, it appears that the Prime Minister is
making it clear that the only way out of the crisis for the country is to
complete the painful compromise that was reached at the Euro summit. This is
the only realistic choice that may avert the worse for the country, economy and
society.
It is an
undisputed fact that Mr. Tsipras wasted valuable time and political capital by
adopting the opinions and catastrophic tactics of his close associates, such as
Mr. Varoufakis. However, beyond any liabilities, what is important now is to
ensure the country’s smooth country within the euro.
It is
imperative to clearly separate the section of SYRIZA which considers the
compromise with the Europeans to be catastrophic. This however must be achieved
by the entire government machine working towards the implementation of the
agreement. It is absurd for various ministers to condemn and lash out against the
measures which they are called upon to enact and then implement.
Aside from
the division within SYRIZA, the Prime Minister must put an end to the divisive
attitudes within his cabinet. The decisive negotiation that the government has
ahead of it does not allow any further delays or undermining. The country has
paid dearly for the fake and baseless promises.
Beyond any
partisan commitments and balances, what is paramount is putting a final end to
the uncertainty plaguing the economy and society. Mr. Tsipras appears to have
made his choice. He must now follow it through, disregarding the political cost
and cries of his comrades.
