The broad political consensus that was achieved in Parliament, despite the differences and diversion, is a political legacy that must be secured. The Prime Minister has the primary responsibility, in seeking out ways to secure this climate of consent, which is absolutely necessary for the smooth course of the country.
It clearly obvious that the dramatic situation the country is in, is not due just to the problematic state of the economy, but primarily the complete inadequacy of our partisan system. The nightmare scenario that we are experiencing proves this, as do the experiences of other countries, with similar financial problems, which managed to overcome the crisis, precisely because there was a minimum political consensus.
The crisis which is endemic in the government camp, as well as the opposition parties, cannot provide an excuse for a new retreat. The discussion here and in Europe about a ‘Grexit’ must finish once and for all. For this to happen though, political stability is a necessary condition.
Micromanagement, changes in the government base on the balances within SYRIZA and with an eye on elections will not only lead nowhere, but they are undermining the greater interests of the economy and society. The country needs a government that at least has a midterm outlook, which on the one hand may serve the agreement with the Europeans and on the other, it may shape a national recovery plan.
A government that has set making it to autumn as a goal is doomed to fail. Since the Prime Minister finally assumed the responsibility of ensuring the country’s membership in the euro, he must now decide whom he will join and who will be left behind. The government that will be formed cannot be left to the desires and planning of the drachma fans.
The Prime Minister has a unique opportunity, which no other government has had in recent years, to not have an opposition against him. He should not waste this….
