Once again the country is living a negotiation nightmare that is prolonging the agony and people’s uncertainty. Despite the heavy and unfair cost of the measures proposed by the Greek government, the creditors appear particularly ruthless in the negotiations, demanding a new mix of equivalent measures which the Prime Minister and his associates have rejected.
This game though – of who will give I first, as time runs out – is not simply dangerous, but rather it is catastrophic for the country and the economy. Both our partners and the government must understand that they cannot toy with the future of a people.
It is absurd and simultaneously pointless to pose dangerous national and moral dilemmas to the people. The people’s will is clear and much documented. Staying in the heart of Europe and the Eurozone is a non-negotiable condition for the majority. Both the Prime Minister and the European leaders ought to take this into consideration.
Any differences remaining to reach an agreement must be bridged by today’s Eurogroup sessions, with good will, the willingness to cooperate, the spirit of solidarity and the necessary concessions. The major sacrifices made by the Greek people cannot go to waste because one side cannot trust the other. At the end of the day Greece must have a sustainable and fair agreement that will ensure that the climate of uncertainty will come to an end. That is the only visible way out and option, both for the government and our European partners.
