The Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reconstruction is preparing a legislative regulation that will convert existing, private law indefinite contracts, to permanent posts, in order to streamline the public sector and provide flexibility for mobility. According the existing legislation, an employee on a private law contract could not be moved and take over the post of a civil servant.

The change will affect employees with private law indefinite contracts who are appointed in local government, public corporate bodies and judicial officers. The scientific staff of independent authorities, employees with fixed contracts and seasonal employees will be excluded from the reform.

A high ranking official at the Interior Ministry has revealed that this reform will not burden the budget, but instead will save resources. The Alternate Minister of Administrative Reform Giorgos Katrougalos will include the reform in an bill that will soon be submitted in Parliament. Rough estimates suggest that this contract conversion may affect some 30,000 to 40,000 employees with private law indefinite contracts.
