The government has not confirmed or denied the possibility of early elections or a referendum, while providing support to its Minister of Finances Yanis Varoufakis.

Mr. Varoufakis gave an interview to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, where he stated that “if needed, if we encounter implacability, we will resort to the Greek people either through elections or a referendum”, to which the Italian journalist added “for the euro” (in parenthesis).

This “clarification”, according to the government, was never made by Mr. Varoufakis and as such is void. An unnamed government official further argued that “over the past few days we have witnessed an attempt to deconstruct the Finance Minister Mr. Varoufakis; either by ironic comments, or by false and inaccurate news”.

The government official further adds that “we will not do them the favor, Yanis Varoufakis is the country’s Minister of Finances. If they want someone like Gikas Hardouvelis, who said ‘yes’ to everything, they will be disappointed”.

While the government source maintains that the government has the overwhelming support of the Greek people and intends to uphold its commitments for a significant and real negotiation, the Left Platform – SYRIZA’s ‘internal opposition’ – may be considering the possibility of early elections, should the government be unable to secure essential provisions of its proclamations in the Eurogroup agreement, as hinted recently by the Left Platform’s Alekos Kalyvis, who appeared on Mega Channel.
