Tens of thousands headed to Syntagma Square on Sunday to join the solidarity protest against austerity and for a “breath of dignity”, with many more similar public gatherings taking place elsewhere in Greece and abroad.

The demonstrations in Athens, Thessaloniki, Volos, Patra and other major cities were primarily organized via social networks. The peaceful demonstration saw thousands join their voices against the ongoing austerity policy and in support of the government.

Public gatherings of solidarity towards the Greek caused were arranged in Berlin, Dublin, Nicosia, Brussels, Paris, London, Rome and even in Brazil.

In Melbourne, Australia, Greek expatriates demonstrated at the Greek festival at Lonsdale Street. The president of the Greek community of Melbourne Vasilis Papastergiadis expressed his support and solidarity to the Greek government’s efforts to negotiate a better deal.

The leader of the Labor Party and main opposition in Australia, Bill Shorten declared that “we are all Greek tonight” and demanded that Greece receives a fair treatment. Bishop Ezekiel of Dervis added “not only tonight, we are always Greeks”.
