The statements of conflict which are being traded from all sides, only a few short hours before the critical Eurogroup, will certainly not facilitate the discussion that will follow, nor the compromise that Greece and Europe need at the moment.

The constant warnings from the German and other European leaders to pressure the Greek government in advance, are clearly not helping towards establishing an appropriate conciliatory climate.

And to be honest, the Minister of Finances and other Ministers constantly changing their opinion is not helping. When you are struggling to regain lost credibility, you cannot claim to accept 70% of the bailout obligations and the next day claim the exact opposite.

It is not the time for media spins or bringing back dead-end election campaign promises. The Greek side has a duty to attend today’s negotiation with a clear, coherent and fully substantiated national plan. There are arguments, so long as our goal is clear, which can be none other than a mutual compromise. Falling out with Europe cannot and must not be our choice in any case.

Today and the next few days until the conclusion of the negotiation will be decisive in structuring a new relationship with Europe. The debate and exchange of arguments and proposals that are necessary to bridge the gaps must take place within European institutions to be effective. The fear-mongering, pressure and blackmailing with statements and leaks are not helping anyone. Right now we need composure, patience, fewer statements and more substance.
