The general secretary of the Greek Communist Party (KKE) Dimitris Koutsoumpas told the SBC television network that “when SYRIZA comes to power, KKE will be in the streets from day one”.

Mr. Koutsoumpas explained that “KKE will be in the streets” even if the working class was in power and had a popular mandate, adding that “our presence in such a government with a radical, progressive and subversive program” would “takes us forward”. The KKE leader argued that the workers must dispel the fear and rally against the “cruel bosses and the brutal, hostile and callous state”, in reference to the general strike on the 27th of November.

He then accused main opposition party SYRIZA of being “the new PASOK” and elaborated that PASOK initially had radical slogans, which it did not implement and eventually caved in when it came to power. Mr. Koutsoumpas expressed his concern over SYRIZA’s intentions when it comes to power, noting that even in the opposition, it is compromising.

Mr. Koutsoumpas added that “a SYRIZA government will impose anti-popular laws and measures” and criticized the main opposition party for not organizing a struggle and giving its voters a direction. He further stressed that if SYRIZA was more active in this respect “many measures would possibly not pass or be delayed” thus creating the conditions for a “greater social-popular alliance” which would challenge the monopolies and government policy.
