The seaquake occured on Monday, 28 March 2005, with a magnitude of 8.7 on the Richter-scale, killing around 1,000 people, according to unofficial figures so far. Ισχυρός σεισμός 7,1 βαθμών σημειώθηκε στα ανοικτά του Γκουάμ, στο δυτικό τμήμα του Ειρηνικού Ωκεανού.
Εξαιτίας του μεγάλου εστιακού βάθους του σεισμού, δεν έχει εκδοθεί προειδοποίηση για τσουνάμι.
Σύμφωνα με το Αμερικανικό Γεωλογικό Ινστιτούτο (USGS), ο σεισμός είχε εστιακό βάθος 134 χλμ. και σημειώθηκε στη θαλάσσια περιοχή περίπου 50 χλμ. βορειοδυτικά του Γκουάμ.
