The gathering of the Presidents of Parliament revealed the government’s weakness to the fullest. The retreat in relation to the television license was disorderly after the State Council’s decision.

The President of Parliament did the impossible in order to reach a consensus with the opposition in order to finally form the National Council for Radio and Television (ESR).

He accepted the opposition’s objections for the presidency of Polydoras, did the same when PASOK and the River objected to the candidate vice president and introduced an amendment to repeal the controversial provisions of the Pappas law and personally committed, in his institutional capacity, that there will be no deviation from the State Council decision.

The President of Parliament essentially committed in all ways, on live TV, that the Pappas operation to subjugate the media has come to an end and that from now on the letter and the spirit of the Constitution will be upheld, without deviation.

These commitments after all are what allowed PASOK and the River to approve of the new ESR, thus creating an atmosphere of consensus.

New Democracy could have also voted if there wasn’t for the atmosphere of suspicion and the main opposition party did not appear with its usual inflexibility.

As it would seem, the necessary four fifths majority will likely be achieved at the next meeting of presidents, in order to form the ESR, as provided by the Constitution, to settle the radio and television landscape.

What because apparent from this long-term conflict is that there are rules in democracies which nobody can break, such as the Constitution. The government tried to circumvent its provisions and failed bitterly.

Let this be a lesson to be learned.

It is time to overcome the artificial crisis with the media and focus on rescuing the national economy and reconstructing the country.

That is the top and main demand of the suffering Greek society.
