The government’s backtracking on its election campaign pledges and impossible promises was revealed in all its glory in the parliamentary debate on ratifying the Elliniko concession agreement. This is not the first time that SYRIZA ministers and MPs vote against what they promised.

This time though it was the Minister of Culture who assumed the role of defending the government’s turn and attempted to give an ideological twist to the repeated breach of promises. As he said, SYRIZA, by default, refers to the democratic path to socialism. He further explained that when faced with defeat the party must compromise in order to carry on the struggle.

This all fine and dandy for the ideologue, Mr. Baltas, to simply break his promises as if it is not big deal and insist on kidding himself that the struggle goes on… Presumably this means that the government believes that the people who supported them with continue to do so while investors will rush to ally themselves on this democratic path to socialism.

Unfortunately this logic leads nowhere. Society will continue to turn its back in disappointment to the government and politics in general and the economy will vegetate until the government decides to abandon the logic of proclaiming leftist ideas and at the same time rushing to comply with everything in hopes of collecting some cash in the government coffers…
