The resignation of the General Secretary of Migration Policy Mr. Voudouris is yet another symptom of how the government operates. Having been appointed by the Prime Minister six months ago, he never managed to get on with his minister and assume any duties. Not because there was nothing for him to do – quite the opposite – bur rather because the government operates like a fiefdom.

No coordination or intention for cooperation, with insinuations on the management of national and community funds, personal vendettas and partisan intrigues dominate in most ministries. With the Prime Minister often watching by as ministers enter public disputes with officers he has chosen, because some continue to pretend to be the so-called defenders of a policy that has been cancelled in practice, from Mr. Tsipras’ retreats and backtracking.

It is the Prime Minister’s job to div out why the General Secretary was never given duties. The management of the refugee crisis however is a ticking time bomb that cannot be left unattended. The situation at the hot spots is becoming increasingly more volatile from the daily conflicts. The situation at the accommodation centers across the country is much worse. The conditions in many of them are unacceptable, as many refugees live in tent while winter approaches.

Rather than activate itself and formulate an efficient plan for managing the crisis, the government is exhausting itself in pointless personal grudges and proclamations. It appears that they have quickly forgotten what went on last autumn, with the disgraceful images in Idomeni, the ports and on the islands.

They must wake up before we are making international headlines again and find ourselves faced with a situation out of control. Because then Mrs. Gerovasili and Mr. Polakis will not be able to demand, as they are used to, from the international media to only present the government positions…
