In their rush to set up their own regime in education, they don’t even have the time to coordinate. After the Education Minister Nikos Filis passed a provision that allows specialized teaching stuff to be promoted to lecturers automatically and without a review, the Alternate Minister of Education Sia Anagnostopoulou urgently called for the provision to be repealed.

It remains to be seen how an enacted law cannot be implemented with an email from the Alt. Minister. Indicative of the sloppiness with which they legislate is that the inability to implement the provision is the reason cited in the email to not apply it.

The Minister of Education ignored the universities, his associates and the minister, by pushing forward with an absurd provision that abolished the independence of universities and all sense of meritocracy and review. The major reactions that came resulted in a self-humiliating repeal and essential recognition of the problematic aspect of the provision.

Instead of focusing of the chronic problems in educations, they exhaust themselves on improvising, based on their party interests, as well as on abolishing any positive steps achieved previously. Indicatively, almost all university councils have resigned. Top Greek and foreign academics who offered to contribute to reorganize the universities, are abandoning the effort out of disappointment.

Small-mindedness, sloppiness, obsession and hatred towards excellence consistently dominate, which consequently undermine education. On the one hand they proclaim that education is the greatest investment in the country and on the other they do all they can to undermine it. Amateurs posing as experts are thus perpetuating the multifarious crisis we are experiencing.
