Moscovici and Tsakalotos may have agreed upon a hot line for direct communication in order to quickly resolve open issues, however the problems and delays persist, which in turn put the review at risk. Most of the prior actions that were agreed are as yet unresolved, while the referral of ELSTAT’s Georgiou has created a new problem, as confirmed by the Commission spokesperson.

Meanwhile, the divs on the progress of the economy are anything but encouraging. According to ELSTAT’s latest data, the recession during the first half of the years is worse than what initially predicted. The tax revenue in July is significantly lower that what was expected, as 25% of taxpayers did not pay the first installment of the income tax. During the same month bank account deposits also shrunk by 25%, the lowest since 2013!

And on Monday millions of taxpayers received their ENFIA bills, which means a new raid on income and deposits with uncertain results. By the end of the year taxpayers are called to pay more than 9 billion euros to cover their obligations.

The over-taxation has exhausted everyone and has completely undermined the economy’s productive capacity. Despite this though, the government insists upon this pointless policy, while its ministers are undermining every investment effort with their procrastination and obsessions. As soon as the slightest intention to privatize a public organization or assets, they delay and exhaust themselves in attacking the TAIPED.

Under this logic the country will go nowhere. It will continue to drown in the recession and suck all that is left of the productive fabric of the economy. The wishes for growth that the Prime Minister is going to announce at the TIF, as his associates reveal, are not convincing anyone anymore. The lost credibility – his and the country’s – cannot be restored with pointless statements and meetings of leaders in Athens. The people, even those who trusted him, have now realized that there is no salvation with pledges and promises…
