If we do not manage to overcome the conspiracy theories, if we do not understand how and why we ended up with this crisis, we will carry on seeking out scapegoats and wonder why after all the sacrifices we cannot see any light at the end of the tunnel. The official statement of the European Commission on the Georgiou referral and the so-called distortion of official data is a slap in the face for those who continue to play cheap political games to shake off their responsibilities.

As it is categorically outlined in the statement “For the Commission and Eurostat it is absolutely clear that data on Greek Government debt during 2010-2015 have been fully reliable and accurately reported to Eurostat”. The Minister of Finance and relevant authorities are called upon to “to actively and publicly challenge the false impression that data were manipulated during 2010-2015 and to protect ELSTAT and its staff from such unfounded claims”.

Of course the SYRIZA government, in collusion with New Democracy officers who insist on supporting the Karamanlis policies, insist upon the matter in spite of the Commission’s warning and is feigning innocence. In its monumental statement it called the Commission “if it has a privileged epistemological position to determine the case – something which the Minister does not claim to have – then it has the moral obligation to submit it to Greek justice to facilitate its work”.

All of this of course to not disturb the underground alliances and the perpetuate the common belief that the country did not go bankrupt due to the aimless economic policy of the 2004-2009 period, but rather due to the bailouts that followed… As if the government does not have all the data, as if it does not know that it took years of efforts to get rid of the Greek statistics stench.

After six years of a crisis we are still at the bottom of the barrel and yet some insist upon maintaining myths, propagate conspiracy theories and blame the callous Europeans for wanting to steal our fortune… Only there is no more room for petty political games and delusions. If we the people and the government do not realize this, then we will quickly reach a dead end.
