In a country where misery and disappoint reign, it is absolutely natural for the success of an unknown, to many, girl in a sport that few followed, to fuel a profound enthusiasm. Of course Anna Korakaki deserves this recognition, this wave of sympathy and elation that inspired her lonely effort.

Because beyond the celebrations and the a posteriori recognition we all have an obligation – with the State first and foremost – to think about how lonely and difficult it was her to reach the top thanks to her persistence and self-confidence. Without any help aside from her family and in appalling conditions, with dedication, personal discipline and seriousness she achieved not only to represent her country, which ignored her, but also to compete on the highest level where he opponents start off from far better conditions.

The political leadership as quick to embrace her success, but it cannot proud for Korakaki or all the others struggling at the Olympics. The crisis is not only to blame for the dramatic restriction in the country’s financial capabilities or the complete lack of planning. Without any help and no interest, just petty political games everywhere. It is not coincidence that the Greek mission to Rio went there thanks to private sponsorship…

Despite all the adversities, with her magnificent and unique effort, Korakaki sent a message that does beyond the Greece of misery and least effort. She proved that when you want something, when you do not give up and have faith in yourself and your skills you can succeed. The least that all those who are rushing to congratulate her to bask in some of her glory can do is to at least adopt her passion, dedication and methodical approach.
