Greek politicians have begun commenting on the ‘Brexit’ referendum result in the United Kingdom, which has caused a major stock market crisis across the world.
In his official statement, the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras underlined the need for a «new vision in Europe» where politics will take precedence over the economy and technocrats, while warning about the rise of the far right in Europe. The Minister of Labor Giorgos Katrougalos argued that the result indicates that neoliberal politics may herald the end of the European dream and stressed the needs for “a new Europe”.
From the main opposition, New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis argued that the result was a wake-up call for Europe which indicates that a «new agreement of truth» is necessary. Partys spokesperson Giorgos Koumoutsakos argued that “hope has been denied” and that Europe is in for an “adventure”.
Veteran ND MP Dora Bakoyanni argued that the result is a “message that Europe needs to take into consideration”. New Democracy VP Adonis Georgiadis claimed that the Brexit prevailed because “they believe the EU is too socialist for their taste”.
The River argued that the referendum was a “mistake in history” and a “defeat for Europe” in its statement.
