The divisive and polarizing climate cultivated by the government ahead of Wednesday’s protest does not only undermine the political and social climate, but also its tactics. It is absurd for Mr. Tsipras to announce that he will present plans for growth and productive reconstruction and at the same time do everything possible to create tension.

The government officers must also decide if the demonstrations are quaint and foolish plans of the opposition or if they are plans of an antidemocratic diversion, which are part of a greater international plan against leftist government across the world. The social and political anti-government demonstrations are an inalienable right in a democratic society, irrespective of who organizes it or what the goal may be, so long as they respect the rule of law.

It is a sample of the antidemocratic understanding of a government that identifies the power given to it by the people with the future and country’s broader interests. No lawful and legitimate protest is hostile towards the country, as the government spokesperson claimed. All that such arrogant attitudes achieve is reveal the authoritarian attitudes endemic in the left.

This escalation from the government has managed to promote the demonstrations far more than what its organizers could have hoped for. The only goal was to create an internal enemy for political and media spin purposes. Neither society nor the economy can endure such petty games. If they truly believe that they can serve the country’s interest, as they claim, they must prove it in practice. Otherwise the demand of the demonstration will be vindicated in practice.
