The social and political protests are an integral part of democratic function, at least in liberal democracies. Only oppressive and anti-democratic regimes prevent, slander and target demonstrations against the government policy being implemented. Obviously those protesting must respect the law and not use violent means to express their opposition.

In recent days a number of government officials have launched an unprecedented, slanderous and demeaning attack against a demonstration organized on Wednesday – which is now being supported by opposition parties. They made serious allegations against the organizers of the event and those who publicly support them.

One would expect less arrogance and more seriousness from party officials who have carried out such demonstrations for years. As a whole, SYRIZA and many of its officers who pretend to be defenders of democracy have served the most extreme forms of protest. They were protagonists in the movement of “indignados” which rose up against the political system, scorned Parliament and tolerated outbreaks of violence.

Today they are bothered by the “resign” slogan which they demanded from those in power in the past, who are often called national underbidders, collaborationists and instruments of the troika and creditors. Today, they will not tolerate any criticism and insist on targeting their political opponents, obviously thinking that they possess the absolute truth and remain the authentic expression of popular will.

This tactic refers to the worst traditions of the left in power. This tactic resulted in the death of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of fighters and comrades who dared to have a different opinion from that of the party and leader.

The country has paid dearly for this policy during the crisis. Protesting – even to demand the resignation of a government – is a democratic right ensured by the Constitutions, provided they respect the rule of law and do not resort to violence.
