The weather conditions have changed dramatically over the weekend in Greece, with strong winds, showers and even snow expected in the city center of Athens. Many areas in northern areas in Greece are already covered in snow, with the temperature drop and onset of frost making transportation in many remote and mountainous areas difficult.

Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Fthiotida, Evrytania, Evia, Peloponnesus and Attica are all expected to see some snowfall during the day, with conditions expected to be worse in northern areas. Some snowfall and sleet is expected in the Aegean islands and Crete, however temperatures will be higher and the weather conditions less pronounced.

The national meteorological agency EMY expects conditions to improve on Tuesday, with temperatures rising (especially in the southern areas of the country), with cloudy weather, rainfall and sporadic snowfall expected in certain areas. Central and northern areas in Greece will see some frost, particularly in early morning and evening hours.

Concern over dam at Evros

The local government authorities in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace are on high alert, after Bulgarian authorities announced on Sunday that the Ivaylovgrad Dam has flooded. The Bulgarian authorities announced that more than 300 cubic meters of water per second would be released.

Some concern has been raised over the embankments (some date back to 1954), with people, fishermen, hunters and farmers being warned to stay away from the rivers Ardas, Evros and Erythropotamos, as well as their embankments.
