The Greek banking system was attacked by a Russian-based team of hackers, the Armada Collective, on Thursday causing the e-banking systems of three banks to go offline for about half an hour.

Greek authorities were aware of a similar attack having been carried out in Switzerland earlier in the year. As such, they were prepared to address the problems that arose.

Banking sources have underlined that there was no threat of any personal data being stolen by the hackers, while the Bank of Greece is prepared to repel any attacks, thanks to support from the national intelligence agency EYP and the Cyber Crime Unit.

According to experts the main threat posed by the attack is the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, since the attacks against the banking sites cause problems to internet providers.
