Employees and pensioners have congregated outside the emergency room of the Evangelismos hospital on Friday morning in order to protests against the lack of staff, medication and funding.

The president of the hospital’s employee union Ilias Sioras told Mega Channel of the dramatic problems. The hospital is dangerously low on medicine and supplies, with the limited funding only covering emergency cases, he stressed.

Mr. Sioras explained that many other major hospitals in Greece face similar problems, such as the Laiko, AHEPA and the hospitals in Crete. According to Mr. Sioras, patients are forced to buy their own antibiotics and many employees – such as waiting staff, contracted workers and security officers – have not been paid since August.
