The Misdemeanor Appeal Courts of Athens have found former PASOK Minister Yannos Papantoniou and his wife Stavroula Kourakou guilty for attempting to hide 1.3 million euros from their 2009 declaration on their source of wealth. No mitigating circumstances were recognized.

Both face a 4-year prison sentence (which can be bought off for 10 euros per day), a 10,000 euro fine and a further 20,000 compensation for damages against the State. The courts held that Mr. Panantoniou “knowingly” submitted an inaccurate statement and “intentionally” omitted the relevant details. His wife “knowingly” signed the declaration.

The courts further argued that the couple took coordinated and planned out measures to hide the sum and as such rejected the defense request to recognize the good behavior and prior honest living.
