The 56th Thessaloniki International Film Festival beings on Friday, with German film Victoria scheduled to be the first of some 200 films from 53 countries which will be shown. The refugee crisis, migration, the financial (and moral) crisis as well as the position of women in society are amongst some of the overall themes explored in this edition of the film festival.

As expected, Greek films have a dominant position in the festival. Amongst the Greek films to be shown are Chevalier by Athina Tsangari, Interruption by Giorgos Zois, Invisible by Dimitris Athanitis and Silent by Giorgos Gikapeppas. There will also be a tribute to 70 years of animation in Greece this year.
