A 16-year-old girl tragically lost her life, after a fire broke out in an apartment building in downtown Athens in the early hours on Tuesday morning. The victim, along with her parents and siblings, lived in a first-floor apartment on Menandrou Street, with a store owned by the family on the ground floor.

The fire broke out at around 1.15am, with the police arriving first on the scene. The police officers managed to rescue the mother and two of her three daughters – aged 5 and 20 respectively. The Fire Brigade, which arrived shortly after, managed to rescue the father of the family, who was later taken to the hospital for burns. Unfortunately though, they were unable to reach the 16-year-old girl in time.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
